February 3 – Scout Sunday and Pinewood Derby

As you know, this coming Sunday is a very big event. Yes, although many people are committing the entire day to the pre-pre-pre game shows and youtubing sneak previews of this year’s Superbowl Ads, we’re going to be celebrating two time-honored events in the annals of Scouting: Scout Sunday and the Pine Wood Derby.

Scout Sunday

Scout Sunday is always celebrated on the first Sunday before February 8 and celebrates the anniversary of the Scouting Movement, and is an opportunity for Pack 529 to recognize the contribution that our chartered organization has made to us, as well as the contribution that Pack 529 has made to the community. Although many of our boys are not Catholic, all are invited to attend the Mass and express our reverence to God in the church. While Scouting does not espouse any religion, as Scouts we share a reverence for the Creator and a wonder in the universe that he has placed us in. We have been invited to participate in St. Paul’s Liturgy on Sunday.

The basic details for the morning are as follows:

  • Arrive in the gym by 9:40 so that we can get ourselves settled, lined up, and coordinated.
  • We’ll go over to the church together at 9:50 and will assemble in the back. Several pairs of boys will go to each door to hand out flyers at the doors to parishoners as they come in.
  • We will have several scouts participate in the Mass, including the readings and the presentation of the gifts at the altar.
  • Mass will be from 10:00 until about 11:00. At the end of Mass, we’ll assemble back in the gym, where we’ll have coffee and donuts for any member of St. Pauls who might want to share in our activity.

Pinewood Derby

Just like last year, we’ll be having the Pinewood Derby in the gym. This year the pack has two tracks of our own, one that we used last year and another one that Mr. Dean resurrected from a gentle slide into oblivion. We have a few rules for the Pinewood Derby, but the most important rule is, as ever, to have fun building, decorating, and racing our cars! We will sponsor the winners to go to the Council-wide event later in the spring.
  • At 11:30 we’ll start weighing in cars and marking them for the Pinewood Derby.
  • At 12:00 or so (once we have all of the cars logged and weighed in) we will start with the Derby.
  • We have 2 tracks (8 lanes total) and we make sure that every car runs every lane to ensure fairness.
  • Running all of the heats takes several hours, so we will be bringing in pizza and snacks for everyone.
  • Families are welcome!
  • We’ll have everyone home for the Superbowl, not to worry.

January – Busy, Busy, Busy!

** December 23 – Pack Meeting & Pinewood Derby Workshop
————————————————————

Welcome back from the holidays! It’s always wonderful to have a white Christmas, and the storm gave us lots of snow for building forts, snowmen, and shoveling driveways.

Next week we will have the Pack Meeting, with announcements and awards that represent what many of our boys have been accomplishing recently. It will be a shorter Pack Meeting than normal, however, as we’re staying late to have our annual Pinewood Derby Workshop. We will have tools available for the boys to work with their dads on cutting and shaping their cars. Once they have done their major shaping they can take their car home and finish it there.

We have the rules for the Pinewood Derby build and race posted here. (http://stpaulspack529.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cb1bee11088bb1aed8d280b94&id=37e33df010&e=1186e75509)

** January 25-27 – Winter Campout
————————————————————

Our most popular campout is our winter campout, held this year at Camp Scouthaven in the Safari lodge. We’re filled up for the overnights (we have 30 bunks), and have plenty of additional people coming for the day on Saturday. This is going to be a great time, with plenty of cold weather activities available for the boys, and plenty of firewood to warm everyone up inside.

The basic details are as follows:
* Arrive Friday night after dinner. We won’t be serving dinner, but may have a snack. Be sure to bring your favorite board game!
* Saturday breakfast at 8am. Anyone coming for the day can begin to arrive at 9:00 for the day’s activities. Be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes.
* Sunday departing immediately after breakfast (which is served around 8:00. Everyone is usually ready for a shower on Sunday morning, so we like to be out by 9:00 or so.
* We’ll have handouts for what gear and clothing to pack, and will have it in electronic format as well by next week.
* The cost is $20 per person for the entire weekend, $10 for just Saturday. Scouts may opt to use their scout account, otherwise we’ll need payment by the Pack Meeting on the 23rd.

More information to come!
